what you can do during tough times
While everyone is cutting back and becoming dormant to weather the current economy, research your competitors to see what they aren’t doing. Think carefully to see what your best strategy would be to give your business the advantage without spending an arm and a leg.

Marketing Pieces:

  • update your website
  • refresh your logo or banner
  • create an email newsletter
  • send out a postcard
  • start a blog
  • launch a companion web page to bring in leads one step before your existing site
  • install a new website form, or downloadable pdf
  • ask for testimonials from your customers that you can post
  • offer industry-related resources, books and tips
  • switch to branded paperless invoicing

Expand your Assets:

  • rewrite your text, or have a copywriter give your words new life
  • hire a photographer, or download new stock photos for your materials
  • get search engine optimization help
  • acquire discounted office furniture, lower-rent space, or bargain-rate services from your vendors
  • trade products and services to keep more cash on hand
  • if companies are approaching you to review and share their products, consider starting your own ad network for extra income

Processes & Offerings:

  • clarify your company’s message
  • identify the quality and value in what you offer your customers
  • simplify the steps your customer needs to take to contact you
  • offer a new smaller economic product or service
  • combine marketing strategies with a partner company that compliments your business
  • consider green alternatives or lower energy costs to reduce spending
  • draw attention to your philanthropy and volunteer work

Networking:

  • call your customers for a personal touch
  • attend meetups, events, or classes from experts in your field
  • support local businesses, and they in turn will support you
  • tell everyone you know about your products/services — you never know who your next customer will be!
  • connect with local or national media, or write press releases
  • if appropriate, network using Biznik, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter
